how to make pom poms

How to Make Pom poms

Materials:

‰ Cardboard
‰ Scissors
‰ Yarn

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Make a cardboard template. Find
something round that you can use as a
template. For this example, use the bottom
or top of a glass. The bigger the circle the
larger the pom-pom. Use some extra yarn
you have around to make your first test
pom-pom.

2. Trace the glass on the cardboard,
two times and cut out these two circles.

3. Now trace another little circle inside along with two lines that
reach out to the outer edge. Cut out the inner circle as shown in
the picture. This is your pom pom template. The template shown
in this picture is about 3 ¾” in diameter.

4. Cut a piece of yarn about 12 inches and place it between the
two pieces of cardboard. This is the tie yarn that holds the pom
pom yarn together.

5. Hold the 2 pieces of cardboard together such that the yarn is
in place and doesn’t slip out. Now take yarn from the skein and
begin wrapping it around the cardboard template. I like to begin in
the center and wrap to the right and then wrap back to the center
and over to the left side and then finish up back in the center. This
approach allows all sides to get an even distribution of yarn. The
more yarn you wrap around, then the denser your pom-pom will be.
This may take some experimentation to get exactly what you want.

6. Make a loose slipknot with the tie yarn that is sandwiched
between the cardboard.

7. Slip your scissors in between the two pieces of cardboard
and begin cutting around the circle. When you are finished, tighten
the tie yarn slipknot as tight as you can get it. Make another
slipknot to make a secure the pom-pom. Slip the cardboard
templates away from the yarn.
